• realism: • in literature, realism is the portrayal of life with fidelity, a realistic artist concerns himself with the here & now, with everyday events, with his own environment & with the social & political movements of his time. • critical realism: • it flourished in the forties & the beginning of the fifties of the 19th century. it refers to the works studying the reality with a critical point of view. • the english critical realists criticized capitalist society from a democratic viewpoint & described the crying contradictions of bourgeois reality. karl marx gave them a high comment, he called them “a brilliant school of novelists” & said: “their graphic & eloquent descriptions have revealed more political & social truth to the world than have all the politicians & moralists added together.”
