Discussion of "Normative Consequences of Efficient Capital Market Research" by Norio Sawabe (Kyoto University).pdf
- The paper by Norio Sawabe uses the example of the drafting and final implementation of IAS 39 to argue that positive theories of accounting, based on the effcient market hypothesis, can reach a normative status when they are codified. I believe that the paper uses a very appropriate example in order to show how the standard setting process is able to create reality by giving normative status to hypothesis that can be seriously questioned at a positive level. The author makes a very good point when he says that accounting standards in order to be successfull have to be taught to users and by doing so they shape the users vision and can give a fictitious objective status to theories that are highly subjective . However I have some concerns about the object of the critic developed in the paper.
